How to Time a Ryobi Engine

In addition to making a range of battery powered, hand-held power tools, Ryobi also makes a line of outdoor landscaping tools, such as trimmers, blowers and chain saws, that have two-cycle, gas-powered engines. The timing on these products refers to the speed at which the gas-powered engine idles. A motor that idles too high will waste fuel. Similarly, if the idle runs too low, your machine is more prone to choking or stalling out. Your Ryobi two-cycle products come with a screw that can adjust the timing by increasing or decreasing fuel flow from the carburetor.

Instructions

    • 1

Check to make sure there is oil in the tank of your Ryobi chain saw or trimmer.

    • 2

Put the ignition switch to the "On" position and the choke lever to the "Start" position. Depress the primer bulb five times.

    • 3

Depress the throttle of your trimmer or chain saw, and then pull your starter rope five or six times or until it sounds like it is trying to run.

    • 4

Place the choke lever to the "Run" position, and then pull the starter rope until your engine starts.

    • 5

Insert your screwdriver into the idle-speed screw, which is located to the left and slightly up from the pull rope. If your idle speed has been slow, or if your engine has been stopping frequently while it runs, turn the screw a half-turn to the right, or clockwise. If your idle speed has been running on the high side, turn the screw a half-turn to the left, or counterclockwise.
