How to Restring the Twine on Ryobi Weedeaters

Ryobi manufactures many home and lawn tools, which are exclusively available at The Home Depot. Designed to cut weeds and grass located in areas a lawnmower cannot access, Ryobi trimmers use string in lieu of a blade to cut grass and weeds. As the trimmer is used, the string will break down and fall off, at which point you must bump the trimmer on the ground to release more string from the spool. After the spool is empty, you must either replace it with a pre-wound spool, or wind more string onto the spool.

Things You'll Need

  • 2.0 mm or 2.4 mm diameter string

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the trimmer and disconnect the spark plug wire. The spark plug wire is on the side of the motor and pulls off.

    • 2

Hold the head of the spool and unscrew the spool retainer, located on the bottom of the center of the head. For model ZR30004, twist the spool retainer counterclockwise, and for other models twist the spool retainer clockwise.

    • 3

Remove the spool from the head, but allow the spring below the spool to remain connected to the head.

    • 4

Cut two pieces of string approximately 9 feet long.

    • 5

Insert the end of one piece of string into the anchor hole on the top part of the spool. Wind the string around the spool following the direction of the arrows on the spool. On the last pass, slide the string through the top spool flange. Trim the string so that approximately six inches remains through the spool flange.

Insert the end of the other piece of string into the anchor hole on the bottom part of the spool. Wind the string around the spool following the direction of the arrows on the spool. On the last pass, slide the string through the bottom spool flange. Trim the string so that approximately 6 inches remains through the spool flange.

Place the spool back onto the head and then secure by replacing the spool retainer. To secure the spool retainer, twist it in the opposite direction that it was twisted to remove.
