How to Fix a Vibration in a Grass Trimmer

Grass trimmers are used to cut the grass around poles and mailboxes or along steps and sidewalks. They trim grass using a nylon string, which the trimmer head spins rapidly. As you use your grass trimmer, you will feel a bit of vibration traveling from the trimmer head up the handle. More vibration than normal usually indicates one of two problems: dirt stuck in the trimmer head or misaligned string. Both problems have easy solutions.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the grass trimmer off. Unplug it from its power source if it is an electric grass trimmer. If it is a gas trimmer, disconnect the spark plug wire.

    • 2

Flip the grass trimmer upside down so you can see underneath the shield. Use a damp cloth to clean off dirt or grass from the underside of the shield. Wipe the trimmer head as well.

    • 3

Remove the trimmer head cover by either twisting it or pushing in the side tabs and pulling it off. Wipe the underside of the head cover with the cloth.

    • 4

Pull the trimmer line spool off the trimmer. Give both nylon strings a gentle tug to make sure the string is wound tightly around the spool.

    • 5

Ensure that the same length of string protrudes from the spool. Each string should stick out 3 to 5 inches. One string sticking out 3 inches and the other string sticking out 5 inches, however, will cause vibration. Cut the string with scissors if necessary.

Place the spool back on the trimmer. Push or twist the cover back into place.
