Check the fuel level in your Ryobi. If it is low, mix a fresh batch of fuel in your gas can. The proper fuel mix for your Ryobi edger-trimmer is 4 ounces of Ryobi two-cycle oil to 1 gallon of gasoline. If your Ryobi has old gas in it, dump it out of the gas tank into a disposal container. Then place fresh gas in your tank and start your trimmer. If it will not start or still runs poorly, continue to the next step.
Remove the sparkplug from your Ryobi using a sparkplug wrench or 5/8-inch socket. Inspect the plug. If it is dirty or cracked, replace it. Try to start your Ryobi. If it runs, you have resolved your issue. If it still will not start, or if it runs poorly, continue to the next step.
Check and clean the air filter. Remove the four screws that hold the air filter and muffler cover. Take the muffler cover off and remove the sponge air filter by hand. Wash the filter in warm water with detergent and then rinse it thoroughly. Apply a small amount of 30-weight oil to the surface of the filter. Use your fingers to spread it over the filter and squeeze out any excess oil, then place the filter back in its cover and replace the four retaining screws.
Adjust the idle speed screw on your Ryobi. If the engine is idling low, insert a screwdriver into the idle speed screw and turn it an eighth of a turn clockwise to increase the idle speed. If the idle speed is too high, turn the screw an eighth of a turn counterclockwise. If your Ryobi still runs poorly after this or will not start at all, contact a local service center.
