How to Install a Fuel Line and Filter on a Lawn Tool

One job you should perform at least annually on your two-cycle lawn tools, such as blowers, trimmers and edgers, is the replacement of fuel lines and filters. The fuel filter removes debris that can float back and forth between your fuel tank and the engine. Changing your fuel filer and fuel line on a regular basis keeps your two-cycle engine running smoothly all year round.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the spark plug wire from your two-cycle engine.

    • 2

Remove the gas tank cap, and drain the contents into a container.

    • 3

Use a screwdriver to remove the rear cover over the carburetor.

    • 4

Pull off the old small plastic hose that connects the primer ball to the gas tank. Replace the hose with a new fuel line. Insert one end over the plastic nipple on the primer ball and the other to the bottom of the fuel tank. Use pliers to pull the fuel line into place.

Remove the end of the second fuel line that runs from the carburetor to the inside the gas tank. First disconnect the end attached to the carburetor. Next, pull the old fuel filter up through the open gas tank hole with a wire or coat hanger. The fuel line is attached to the bottom of the old fuel filter.

Attach one end of the new fuel line to the bottom of the new fuel filter. Use a pair of pliers to pull the rubber line up over the filter's bottom.

    • 7

Use the wire to feed the new fuel line and fuel filter down into the gas tank and through the small fuel line hole at the bottom of the gas tank. Pull the fuel line through the hole at the bottom of the fuel tank. As you do this, the new fuel filter will seat itself at the bottom of the plastic fuel tank. Once the fuel filter and that end of the fuel line are secure, run the other end of the fuel line back and connect it to the carburetor.

Fill your gas tank, and start your two-cycle engine to test it.
