How to Replace the Starter Rope on a Weed Eater

Weed Eaters that do not have electric ignition systems rely on elbow grease to start the engine. A starter rope winds around the engine crank pulley. By yanking quickly and forcefully on the starter rope, you turn the weed eater engine over so the fuel and ignition systems can get the engine running. The rope takes a lot of abuse in its lifespan and will eventually break. When this occurs, you can replace the rope in under 30 minutes and return to your yard work.

Things You'll Need

Remove the starter rope cover, where the starter rope enters the weed eater body, using a Phillips screwdriver to back the screws out before pulling the cover off by hand.

Pry the starter rope lock tab, located in the crank pulley's center, open with the tip of the screwdriver. Pull the old starter rope out of the pulley and then out of the starter rope cover.

Thread the new starter rope through the starter rope cover by hand. Insert the tip of the rope into the crank pulley, below the starter rope lock tab. Close the lock tab onto the starter rope by hand.

Wind the start rope around the crank pulley counterclockwise. Place the starter rope cover back on the weed eater body by hand. Reinstall the starter rope cover retaining screws using the Phillips screwdriver.
