How to Organize Yard Tools

Yard tools can prove invaluable in your yard and garden, but they are only useful when they are easy to find and identify. As is the case with other items in the home, properly organized yard tools can help you avoid plenty of headaches. Whether you keep these tools in your garage or in a backyard shed, you have ways to keep them organized and easy to find.

Buy a large pegboard to hold tools. Just like in a workshop, using a pegboard to hang yard tools is an effective way to organize them. Perhaps most importantly, it doesn't require using any floor space, which is helpful if you have a small area. You can buy pegboard at any hardware store, as well as a large variety of mounting brackets that you can insert into the pegboard holes. You can mount pegboard to the studs on any wall in your garage or shed, then place mounting brackets for many tools throughout the board. If you have small children, and want to ensure they return tools to their correct location, trace each tool's shape onto the board with a permanent marker.

Organize your tools so that you have easy access to the commonly used items. You use some garden tools, such as a trowel, often throughout the spring and summer. You use other tools for preparing gardens in the spring, but you don't use them much the rest of the growing season. Keep tools you use yearly in an out-of-the-way location. Keep these tools high on a pegboard or shelf. Make it easy to access commonly used tools on a regular basis, either low on a shelf or in a bucket that you fill with tools for your garden.

Keep power tools at the front of your garage or shed for easy removal. If you own a large yard, your garage or shed may include several power tools for keeping the yard in shape. Some of these tools can include a lawn mower, edger, weed trimmer and even a ride-on tractor. Mount smaller power tools, such as your weed trimmer, on wall brackets to help keep the floor clear. Park larger machines in your garage or shed, but first determine that your layout allows someone to drive or pull them hem in and out of the door. It is frustrating to have a lawnmower buried at the back of your shed and have to remove half the shed's contents to get at it. Lock up gasoline and oil for your power tools.

Store yard chemicals in locked cabinets or on high shelves. While they might not be considered tools in the traditional sense, yard and garden chemicals are tools in the sense that you use them for regular yard maintenance. Some of these products include weed remover, fertilizer and other substances that can be harmful if consumed. Keeping them in a locked cupboard prevents someone from accidentally knocking a container off a shelf where a child or pet could access its contents.
