How to Load a Dual Spool for a Weed Trimmer

Some weed trimmers have two strings that feed out of the trimmer head assembly. Using two strings increases the cutting ability of the tool. It also increases the amount of work when it comes time to restring your weed trimmer. Although, restringing can be tedious, it is not a difficult process.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the weed trimmer electrical cord if you power it by electricity. If you don't, make sure the weed trimmer motor is off.

    • 2

Flip the weed trimmer upside down so you can see the trimmer head assembly at the bottom of the trimmer shaft. The strings feeds out of the trimmer head assembly, so it is relatively easy to locate.

    • 3

Inspect the trimmer head assembly. The process for removing the trimmer string spool may differ slightly. However, in general wackers have one of two methods. If you locate a large round plastic bolt in the center of the trimmer head, turn the bolt counterclockwise with your hand. With the bolt removed, pull the trimmer head cover off the trimmer head. If you do not locate a bolt, inspect the sides of the trimmer head cover for push tabs. Push in on both tabs and pull the trimmer head cover off the trimmer head.

Pull the trimmer string spool off the trimmer shaft. Take note of which end is up on the spool. Usually, you will notice a few arrows and markings to help you keep track of this.

    • 5

Unwind any of the old string on the trimmer. Usually, you'll have a small amount left on the spool. Discard the old string.

    • 6

Cut two pieces of trimmer string approximately seven to nine feet long. Use a utility knife.

    • 7

Place the tip of one string into one of the holes in the side of the trimmer string spool. Start with the bottom hole. Turn the string around the spool. Follow the arrow printed on the top of the spool. Keep the windings towards the bottom of the spool. With approximately 12 inches left, secure the string to the notch on the top edge of the spool. This will lock the string in place.

Place the tip of the second string into the top hole. Turn the string around the spool. Follow the arrow printed on the top of the spool. Keep the windings towards the top of the spool. With approximately 12 inches left, secure the string to the notch on the top edge of the spool.

    • 9

Slide the spool onto the trimmer shaft, then feed the string through the eyelet holes on the trimmer head.

    • 10

Secure the trimmer head to the trimmer head assembly by snapping it into place or by securing it with the large plastic bolt.

    • 11

Pull hard on each string to release it from the notch on the side of the spool. If you do not do this, the string will not feed properly when you use the trimmer.
