How to Laser Cut Turf

A hand-held laser can be used to cut and engrave into turf strips on any lawn. The process is usually carried out by a professional, however, with moderate experience the task can be completed by most individuals. A hand-held laser can also be used to scorch the turf surface, killing the grass and changing the color of the grass to a burnt brown. The surrounding grass is unaffected. This enables shapes, patterns or lettering to be written onto grass which could be used as an advertising technique.

Instructions

    • 1

Design the shape or pattern that you wish to be cut into the turf. This can be done on a computer or with pen and paper.

    • 2

Mark the same pattern out in actual size on the turf, using a paintbrush and paint, tape or string. Choose an appropriate location with a short length of grass. The area must be fully accessible for the equipment being used.

    • 3

Start the engraving process with the hand-held laser. Depending on the type of laser being used, the device may require a warm up period. Make sure no other individuals are standing nearby. Wear specifically designed laser goggles. Have a bucket of water and/or sand located nearby in case of ignition. Remove the lens cap, activate the laser and observe to ensure appropriate size and depth of cuts are being made.

    • 4

Gradually draw the laser away from your body with gentle movements to create an accurate cut. Ensure laser direction is kept under control and well away from parts of your body or any other nearby materials.
