How to Hook Up Sump Pumps in Tandem

Sump pumps are used to drain water from basements in flood prone areas. These mechanical pumps take collected water, which drains into your sump pump pit, and pump it outside your house via a discharge pipe. If you have a severe drainage problem and one sump pump can't pump all of the water out, you can set up a second sump pump in tandem with the first.

Things You'll Need

  • New sump pump
  • PVC connector
  • PVC riser
  • PVC T-connector
  • Rubber coupling
  • PVC saw
  • PVC glue

Instructions

    • 1

      Unplug your existing sump pump.

    • 2

Insert a 1 ½-inch PVC male adapter into your new sump pump's port. Apply PVC glue to the other end of your adapter and attach a piece of PVC riser pipe to it. Ideally, the riser should be about eight inches higher than the depth of the sump pump pit, or the same length as the riser on your old pump.

    • 3

Use a plastic tie to fasten your new pump's chords to the riser.

    • 4

Attach a rubber coupling to the new pump's PVC riser and insert the new check valve.

    • 5

Use your PVC saw to cut a four-inch section out of your old sump pump's outflow pipe. Attach the two straight ends of the PVC Y-connector to the outflow pipe you just cut, using PVC glue to seal the bond.

    • 6

Attach a piece of PVC to the "Y" end of the Y-connector with PVC glue.

    • 7

Use a check valve to run a PVC connector from the Y-connector to the rubber coupling. Make sure the connections are tight.

    • 8

Place the new sump pump into the sump pump pit right next to your old one. If possible, do not allow them to touch. Power them both up.
