How to Replace Weed Eater Coils

The coil in a weed eater bolts to the top of the engine block; it works in unison with the flywheel that is located right beside the coil. Magnets placed on the flywheel pass by the coil as the engine turns, and the coil creates electricity or a spark which travels down the spark plug wire into the spark plug. There the spark encounters a mixture of fuel and oxygen which then combusts. When the coil malfunctions, the engine will either not start or run erratically. Replacing the coil requires knowledge of engine theory. This task will take 20 minutes to complete.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the weed eater flat on a workbench. Pull the spark wire off the spark plug from the front of the engine, locate the four hex bolts under the engine, and remove the four bolts with the hex wrench. Slide the driveshaft off the bottom of the engine to expose the coil.

    • 2

Remove the two Phillips screws holding the coil against the engine block and remove the old coil. Install the new coil; loosely tighten the Phillips screws by hand.

    • 3

Turn the flywheel until the magnets are facing the coil, drawing it inwards. Place the business card between the coil prongs and the magnets in the flywheel, tighten down the screws with the screwdriver, and remove the business card.

    • 4

Slide the driveshaft back onto the bottom of the engine and reinstall the four hex bolts, push the spark plug wire back onto the spark plug.
