How to Set Engine Timing on an Echo Chainsaw

The timing on an Echo chainsaw is controlled by the carburetor. The carburetor takes the gasoline from the gas tank, and oxygen pulled through the air filter, and mixes it together before sending it to the engine cylinder where it ignites. The more you advance the throttle, the more mixture goes to the engine cylinder. If the carburetor is bumped, it may become necessary to adjust the carburetor to correct sluggish or erratic performance. This may also be the case as the engine ages. Setting the engine timing on your Echo chainsaw will take around 10 minutes to complete.

Set the chainsaw on a flat workbench. Locate the carburetor adjustment screws on the left side of the chainsaw, directly above the air filter; there are two screws marked "L" for the low speed adjustment, "H" for the high-speed adjustment. Directly behind those two screws is a knob, that is the idle adjustment.

Turn the "L" screw with the flathead screwdriver clockwise until the screw seats; do not over tighten. Turn the "L" screw counterclockwise 1 1/8 of a turn. Turn the "H" screw clockwise until it seats; do not over tighten. Turn the "H" screw counterclockwise one full turn.

Turn the ignition switch to the ON position, start the engine and allow it to warm up for 2 to 3 minutes. Turn the idle knob clockwise until the chain starts to turn. Turn counterclockwise 1/2 turn.
