How to Troubleshoot the Stihl Ignition Module

Stihl is well known for its line of chainsaws. The ignition module on the Stihl chainsaw sends electricity, which flywheel magnets create in passing by the prongs on the module, to the spark plug, igniting fuel in the engine cylinder. A too hot engine can damage the ignition module, causing the engine to run poorly or not at all. The procedure to test the ignition module will take 10 minutes.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

Set the chainsaw on a flat workbench, remove the two nuts holding the clutch cover on the right side of the engine with the socket wrench. Turn the chain adjustment screw counterclockwise until the chain loosens, slide the chain off the bar and slide off the guide bar. Reinstall the clutch cover.

Remove the air filter on top of the engine. It is in front of the throttle trigger. Pull off the spark plug wire from the spark plug, located in front of the air filter. Insert the spark plug wire into the lead coming out of the spark tester; insert the other lead from the spark tester on the spark plug.

Push the ignition switch to the ON position; pull the starter rope handle rapidly while watching the window on the spark tester. If the spark is strong and blue, the coil is operating properly, if there is a weak or non-existent spark, the coil needs replacing.
