How to Use a Stihl Chain Sharpener

In addition to manufacturing a wide array of chain saws and other outdoor lawn tools, Stihl also makes a number of chain saw blade sharpeners. It is important to keep your chain saw blade sharp so it runs effectively and to avoid accidents caused by kickback from dull blades. The sharpener has a grinding wheel that spins and sharpens each individual link. It will take you about 30 minutes to sharpen your chain blade on the Stihl chain sharpener.

Instructions

    • 1

Read your Stihl chain sharpener directions carefully before using.

    • 2

Release the clamping lever, and then place the chain, with the drive link tangs pointing downwards, in the clamping rail. The cutting edges of the chain should be pointed slightly inward to the left.

    • 3

Pull the master cutter back so that it rests against the stop. The stops' pivot pin moves backwards and forward in the arm. Pull the stop in the direction of the arrow.

    • 4

Set the scale on the tool rest to the sharpening angle you want to use, and then tighten down the wing nut.

    • 5

Set the handle to move the motor arm down until the grinding wheel touches the cutter. Also screw the travel limiting screw down as far down as the stop lug, and then tighten down the knurled nut on the limiter screw.

    • 6

Set the motor arm to the neutral position, and then switch the motor on.

    • 7

Lower the motor arm, and sharpen the side plate of the chain by applying the grinding wheel several times. When the chain link is sharpened to satisfaction, raise the control arm and turn motor off.

    • 8

Loosen the travel limiting screw and knurled nut, move to the next link of the chain, and continue until you have worked your way around the entire chain.
