How to Convert Your Gas Trimmer to a Bump Head

Gas string trimmers come standard with either a fixed cutting head, where you manually feed the line out by hand every time the line start to wear down, or a bump feed cutting head, where you simply tap the end of the head on the ground while the trimmer throttle is in the "fast" position. Changing a fixed head to a bump feed will save time on your yard work, and will take only 5 minutes to switch over.

Instructions

    • 1

Set the trimmer on a flat workbench; turn the ignition switch to the "off" position.

    • 2

Slide the cutting head removal tool that was included with the trimmer into the hole located just above the cutting head. This will hold the driveshaft during removal. Turn the cutting head counterclockwise by hand and remove it.

Install the universal bump feed head. Locate the adapter for your model of trimmer and screw the adapter onto the screw that the old cutting head was on. Slide the cutting head removal tool in the hole to hold the driveshaft in position. Turn the new cutting head clockwise until tight.
