Featherlite Grass Trimmer Problems

Grass trimmers are used to cut the grass around objects in your lawn, such as poles, birdbaths or laundry lines. They are fairly simple machines and can last for quite a long time. Featherlite grass trimmers, manufactured by Weedeater, are lightweight and easy to manipulate around objects. The parts warranty for a Featherlite is up to two years. However, before you send it in for service, run through a list of possible problems to see if you can fix the problem yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the gas cap and see if there is enough fuel in the tank. Fill the tank if it is empty. If there is old fuel in the tank, drain the old fuel out and refill with clean fuel/oil mix.

    • 2

Replace the spark plug once per year. If you have not replaced your spark plug and the Featherlite grass trimmer is not starting, remove the old spark plug and put a new one in its place. Set the spark plug gap to 0.025 using a spark plug gap gauge.

    • 3

Stop pulling the start cord and let the grass trimmer sit for 15 minutes if you start to smell gas. The smell of gas and an engine that refuses to start generally points to a flooded engine. To avoid flooding the engine, push the priming bulb six times, move the choke to the "half choke" position and pull the start cord six times.

    • 4

Loosen the screw in the throttle trigger if the engine of your Featherlite grass trimmer starts but is not idling properly. If this does not help, the carburetor will need to be adjusted. This is generally not something you should attempt unless you have some basic knowledge of small engines.

    • 5

Change the air filter in your grass trimmer at least once per year. A dirty air filter will cause the trimmer to smoke or stop running. A dirty spark plug will also cause the engine to stop running.

    • 6

Mix 2-cycle air-cooled engine oil with gasoline when filling your Featherlite grass trimmer. The ratio should be 40:1, which means for every 1 gallon of unleaded gas there needs to be 3.2 oz. of oil. Adding too much oil to the gas will cause the engine to smoke.

    • 7

Remove the trimmer head from the spool if the line will not advance. Check to make sure the line is properly wound around the spool. Also, make sure that you are using 1.6-mm sized line.

    • 8

Cut the extending string off 3 to 5 inches from the head. Too little exposed string can cause the string to back up into the trimmer head.
