How to Cut a Tree Branch With a Saw

Trees around a house can add a great deal of beauty and make a yard look and feel alive. They can also provide shade with their leaf-covered branches. But sometimes a branch on a tree may interfere with siding, gutters or other parts of the structure. They may also reach too far over a driveway and scratch vehicles as they pull in and out. Cutting a tree branch with a saw is achieved in a straight forward procedure with little effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Setup a step ladder by the tree; the ladder should be tall enough to reach the branch. Do not set the ladder directly under the branch, but beside it and facing it so you can saw the branch straight on and not at an angle. Ensure that the ladder is firmly planted on the ground and does not rock or pitch.

    • 2

Position yourself on the ladder so that you are at the same level as the branch. Plant both feet firmly on the step of the ladder on which you are standing.

    • 3

Wear goggles to protect your eyes from flying sawdust and place work gloves on your hands.

    • 4

Select a location on the branch for the cut that is as close to the very base of the branch as you can get.

    • 5

Hold the saw perpendicular to the branch and use long even strokes to cut the branch. Use your free hand to steady yourself by holding onto another part of the tree. Continue to saw the branch until you have cut all the way through and the branch has been severed from the tree.
