How to Reline a Spool for a Weed Trimmer

Replace the trim line of your weed trimmer routinely. You can reline the trim spool in just a few minutes. The trim spool sits behind the bump cap on the bottom of the weed trimmer and is held on with tabs on the cap that slide into plastic slots on the base. The spool has a spring behind it, that when bumped on the ground, feeds the line out of the spool.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the electrical cord from the electric weed trimmer before attempting to replace the trim line in the spool. If the weed trimmer is gas powered, remove the spark plug with a spark plug tool before removing the spool.

    • 2

Press in on the bump cap on the bottom of the weed trimmer and turn the cap counterclockwise until it comes loose from the base. Remove the spool carefully and set the spring that sits behind the spool out of the way.

    • 3

Cut 15-to-20 feet of new line from the trim line stock with scissors and place one end of the new trim line in the slot on the side of the spool. Hold your thumb over the slot to keep the trim line in place and begin wrapping the line around the spool tightly in the direction indicated on the spool.

    • 4

Leave about 1 foot of line hanging out of the spool and thread the end of the line through the hole in the bump cap. Set the spool inside the bump cap and hold the assembly together, removing any slack in the line by turning the spool.

    • 5

Place the spring back on the base of the weed trimmer and attach the spool and bump cap assembly to the base, turning the cap clockwise to lock it in place. Reattach the spark plug or plug the electrical cord back into the weed trimmer.
