Information on a Stihl EC70 Electric Edger

Stihl, headquartered in Waiblingen, Germany, was founded in 1926 as a manufacturer of consumer and commercial power equipment. It released the EC70 edger in 1994, and this edger runs on electric power as opposed to gasoline. Stihl no longer manufactures this product, but you can still purchase replacement parts from third-party vendors. Always use the proper safety equipment when opening your edger, including gloves, goggles and ear protectors.
  1. Specs

    • The Stihl EC70 edger weighs 11 pounds and it is 72 inches long. It produces up to 69.5 decibels of noise. The optional depth wheel is 5 inches in diameter and 1.26 inches wide. The motor produces up to 660 watts of power. The rated motor speed with the blade is 7,100 rpm, and the motor no-load idle speed is up to 12,000 rpm. It uses a 15 amp fuse.

    Features

    • The edger has two handles: a D-loop handle on the front and a rear handle. The D-loop handle helps you control the edger, and it reduces vibrations, which can cause user fatigue. It has two wheels to help guide you along the edge of walkways, pathways and driveways. The power supply cord fits into a standard, two-prong outlet. The strain relief flat provides support to an extension cord and keeps the trimmer from becoming unplugged. A skirt is located near the blade, and this keeps debris from flying at you while you are operating the edger.

    Maintenance

    • Always thoroughly clean the edger before storage, including removing any debris caught in the blades. Remove any dirt from the cooling air inlets. Store the Stihl EC70 edger in a cool, dry place, and keep it away from children. Do not fix a warped, cracked or bent blade by welding it, and don't try to straighten the blade. Instead, replace the blade with a Stihl-approved cutting blade. Attempting to repair the blade could cause injuries. Always properly lubricate your motor to prevent overheating.

    Safety

    • Do not yank the cord, as this may cause damage, and do not try to reach further than the cord. Do not operate the edger when it is raining or damp outside. Keep children and pets at least 50 feet away from the edger while you are operating it. Do not walk around with your finger on the switch to keep from accidentally starting the edger. Do not clean the blades while you are operating the device. Instead, wait for the blades to stop moving, and unplug the device. Check for loose or broken components before starting the edger. Replace or tighten as necessary.
