How to Use Turf Edger

Incorrectly using a turf edger, also called a lawn edger, can create unnecessarily wide gaps between lawn and surrounding objects. These gaps can then lead to erosion problems when rainwater channels down the gaps. Additionally, incorrect usage can tire your arms as you fight to hold it at the correct angle. Correctly using turf edger will not hurt your arms, and it can keep weeds at bay and provide a manicured look similar to giving your lawn a "trim around the ears." Everyone enjoys a good haircut. Give your lawn the trim it deserves.

Instructions

    • 1

Grip the turf edger's handle allowing the waist bar to rest against your waist.

    • 2

Guide the turf edger with your hip rested squarely against the waist bar, noting how small movements in your hip translate into the edger rotor moving to different angles.

    • 3

      Turn on the turf edger.

    • 4

Test the turf edger on a relatively hidden part of your lawn, practicing keeping it at a 20- to 25-degree angle.

    • 5

Practice trimming to the proper depth of 1/2 to 1 inch. If you have problems visually eying the depth, cut a gap in the lawn, stick your finger into the gap and memorize the depth of about one knuckle.

    • 6

Trim around stones and steps, keeping the edger at a 20-degree angle and the depth to about 1 inch.
