How to Tape a Tool Handle

Split wooden tool handles are common. If the split is not repaired, it will result in the complete failure of the handle. Shovels, rakes or almost any split wooden handle can be given a new lease on life with black electrician's tape. Electrician's tape works best because it stretches. It's very strong, it sticks to itself, feels smooth to the touch and gives the handle a certain amount of cushion.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Pull 3 inches of the tape out of the spool, but don't' cut it. Locate the bottom of the split, by inserting the tip of a sharp knife into the split and prying it open.

    • 2

Place the loose end of the tape 3 inches below the terminating point of the split and begin wrapping the handle with the tape.

    • 3

Pull hard on the tape to stretch it as you revolve the handle around, releasing more tape, overlapping each previous band of tape by 1/4 inch as you wrap circles around the handle moving up to the top.

    • 4

Wrap the tape to within 1 inch of the top. Use scissors to cut the tape. Start another band of tape in the opposite wrapping direction as the first layer, overlapping each previous band as you move down the handle.

    • 5

Stop when you get to the point where you started and cut the tape.
