How to Start a Gas Trimmer

String trimmers allow you to cut grass and weeds in areas that are not easily accessible to your lawn mower, or in areas that require precision cutting. As the name implies, string trimmers use one or two pieces of nylon string, rather than a blade, to cut weeds and grass. The two types of string trimmers available on the market are gas powered and electric. Electric trimmers are easier to start, however they require constant power from a power cord. Starting a gas trimmer requires several steps; however, once started, you are not confined to the length of the power cord.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the trimmer with gasoline and oil following the instructions in the trimmer's owner's manual.

    • 2

Place the trimmer on firm ground, with both the motor and the trimmer head touching the ground.

    • 3

Move the "On/Off" switch to the "On" position.

    • 4

Place your left hand on the throttle lock to depress it. Hold the throttle lock in the depressed position. The throttle lock is located on the top of the trimmer shaft.

    • 5

Move the choke lever to the "Cold" or "Full Choke" position.

    • 6

Press the purge valve, also known as the "primer bulb" six times to transfer fuel from the tank to the engine. The primer bulb appears to be a rubber ball, located on the side of the motor.

    • 7

Pull the recoil cord three times, or until you hear the engine begin to start and then turn off.

    • 8

Move the choke lever to the "Run" or "Off Choke" position.

    • 9

Pull the recoil cord again to start the gas trimmer. It may be necessary to pull the recoil cord several times to start the trimmer.
