How to Operate a Trencher

Trenching is not difficult, but a trench can become an open grave if you don't follow safety precautions. Wear snug clothes and safety shoes; repair any loose or missing parts before using; read safety warnings; and look for hydraulic leaks with piece of cardboard or wood (never with your hand). At no time should you smoke, or fill the fuel tank when it's running or even warm. Trenchers come in different sizes, makes and models, including residential and commercial trenchers -- exercise caution with all of them.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the oil level and fuel level inside of the trencher.

    • 2

Turn the key until the trencher starts.

    • 3

Move the throttle lever to the low position. Position the transmission lever to the neutral position.

    • 4

Move the hydraulic pump lever to the "on" position. Raise the trencher bar by pulling up on the trencher bar lever.

    • 5

Disengage the wheels to the trencher. Move the transmission lever to the forward position. Move the throttle lever up to increase the speed of the trencher. Re-engage the wheels and lower the trencher bar to the ground once the trencher is in the desired digging area.

    • 6

Wait for the trencher bar to dig to the desired depth. Increase the speed of the trencher bar using the throttle lever as needed for faster digging. Once the trencher bar has reached the desired depth, use the transmission lever to move the trencher backwards while the trencher bar digs the trench.
