How to Tighten a Chain on a McCulloch MS1838AV Chain Saw

The McCulloch MS1838AV chain saw is a convenient tool for homeowners who have trees or tall shrubs on their property. This chain saw helps to make short work of trimming limbs or downing dead or damaged trees. The chain on your saw takes a lot of abuse. One way to keep your chain in good working order is to periodically tighten the tension. Tightening a chain on a McCulloch MS1838AV is much like any other brand of saw.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the McCulloch MS1838AV chain saw on a flat surface, such as a work bench. Remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug.

    • 2

Pull the chain brake toward the handle to disengage the brake. The chain brake is the handle in front of the main handle you hold when cutting with the chain saw.

    • 3

Loosen the two nuts securing the chain bar cover to the side of the saw, using a wrench. The cover is on the right-front side of the unit as you look at it from the rear of the saw. You only need to loosen the nuts two full turns.

    • 4

Move to the front of the chain saw and find the chain adjustment screw. The adjustment screw is on the front of the saw on the right side of the chain bar.

    • 5

Turn the adjustment screw clockwise 1/4 turn with a Phillips screwdriver. The chain should be snug against the bar but move freely. Grasp the side of the chain and pull it forward to ensure that the chain moves freely.

    • 6

Hold the front of the chain bar up with your fingers and tighten the side cover securing the nuts. Push the chain brake forward and reattach the spark plug wire to the top of the spark plug.
