Protect your eyes from flying debris and rocks thrown by the weed cutter by wearing safety glasses. Wear tight-fitting clothes and tie back your hair so nothing gets caught in the weed cutter. Wear long pants nonslip boots to protect your legs and feet. Leather gloves will protect your hands from getting cut and help cushion the constant vibration of the weed cutter. Use ear plugs to protect your ears from the engine noise.
Pick up any objects lying on your lawn before you start up your weed cutter. Watch for bottles, rocks, twigs, wire, sticks and tools.
Look around to see if anyone is standing nearby before you turn on your weed cutter. Tell people to stay at least 30 feet away from you, since objects can be thrown up to 30 feet by the weed cutter. Stop and turn off your weed cutter immediately if someone approaches you.
Stand up straight with the weed cutter. Hold the trigger handle using your right hand and guide the weed cutter with your left. Use both hands at all times while operating the equipment.
Hold the weed cutter below your waist and start it while it's on firm ground.
Cut weeds in a sweeping motion from left to right to ensure all debris and rocks fly away from you. Don't swing your weed cutter higher than your hips.
Keep the line of your weed cutter parallel to the ground with out bending over, ensuring the cutter does not get caught in the cut weeds.
Feed more nylon line automatically or manually, according to the manufacturer's instructions for your weed cutter.
Store your weed cutter unplugged and indoors, in a high place out of reach of children. Check to see that all guards are in place and position your weed cutter in such a way that sharp parts cannot cause accidental injuries.
