How to Troubleshoot a Stihl Mini Boss

Stihl manufactures many outdoor lawn tools including chainsaws. The Mini Boss, or MS 180, is a small gas-powered chainsaw. Although these products do not need much maintenance, they can sometimes break down or run poorly. You can troubleshoot a few basic problems on your own. Being able to do this may save you the money you would spend if you had to bring it into a shop for repairs.

Pull the spark plug wire off. Use a spark plug wrench to remove it. If there is dirt or other deposits on the plug it could mean you have bad fuel mix. Use a towel to clean off the old plug, or install a new one. Start your Mini Boss.

Make sure you have gas. If there is no gas, mix one gallon of unleaded gas in a gas can with 2.6 fluid ounces of Stihl 2-cycle oil. Shake the contents thoroughly. Pour out your old gas and add the new gas mix. Try to start the chainsaw.

Clean the air filter. To do this, squeeze the trigger and press in on the interlock lever. While you do this, set the master control to the cold start position, which is marked on the saw. Twist the air filter shroud lock, behind the handle, counterclockwise and remove the shroud. Pull the air filter straight up and out. Wash in warm water. Dry the filter with a towel and re-install it.

Adjust the idle speed screw if your chainsaw runs, but is running poorly. Insert the screwdriver into the screw and turn it to the left until it is seated. Start the chainsaw and turn the screw two full turns to the right.
