How to Turn Off a String Trimmer

String trimmers make quick work of trimming around driveways, patios and garden areas and leave your lawn looking well-groomed. There are string trimmer manuals that offer specific guidelines for proper operation to help ensure the life of the tool. However, knowing how to shut off a string trimmer properly is often taken for granted. Turning off a string trimmer correctly helps to ensure internal parts do not warp, especially on gas-powered models.

Instructions

    • 1

Release your finger from the throttle trigger and allow the engine to come to idle speed if you own a gas-powered string trimmer. Releasing the trigger on an electrical corded or cordless model automatically turns off the string trimmer.

    • 2

Allow the engine to cool down for one minute at idle speed if using a gas-powered model. This helps to prevent vapor-lock and also prevents internal parts from warping.

    • 3

Press the "On/Off" control button to the "Off" position. Allow the trimmer head to come to a complete stop.
