Pull String Will Not Rewind on a Homelite Weedeater

The pull cord on a Homelite weedeater wraps around a recoil pulley. When you pull the cord, the recoil pulley spins a shaft inside the engine, which forces the engine to turn over and start. There is a recoil spring mounted under the pulley that retracts the pulley to wrap the string back around the pulley. In most cases, when the string will not recoil onto the pulley, the recoil spring is the culprit.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the throttle cable that connects the trigger on the handle to the carburetor on the motor. Squeeze the cable at the base of the carburetor with a pair of needle nose pliers and pull the cable from the carburetor.

    • 2

Locate and remove the four screws that secure the trimmer shaft to the front of the motor. Remove the screws with a Phillip's screwdriver and slide the trimmer shaft off the motor.

    • 3

Remove the screws that hold the housing cover onto the front of the engine with a screwdriver and disassemble the cover. This exposes the recoil housing.

    • 4

Cut the cord off the T-handle, then cut the cord off the pulley with a utility knife or scissors. Remove the remaining cord from the pulley and discard it.

    • 5

Slide the pulley off the engine shaft, then pull the spring off of the shaft.

    • 6

Place the new spring onto the engine shaft. Slide the prong on the end of the spring into the hole on the base of the motor.

    • 7

Slide the pulley onto the shaft, line up the hole on the bottom of the pulley with the prong on the top of the spring.

    • 8

Tie a small knot into the end of the replacement rope, then slide the rope though the hole on the pulley. Wrap the rope around the pulley counterclockwise until you have approximately six inches left unwound.

    • 9

Place the cover onto the engine and slide the rope through the eyelet hole in the cover. Re-attach the T- handle to the new rope.

    • 10

Reattach the trimmer shaft and then slide he throttle cable back into the carburetor with the needle nose pliers.
