How to Put a Line in a Weedeater

The Weed Eater company manufactures a variety of lawn and garden tools. Its line of string trimmers features both corded and cordless styles that cut using a spinning nylon line. When the line runs out, a replacement line must be installed. Although the process of replacing the line in a Weed Eater trimmer varies slightly by model, the basic concept is the same for all of them.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the Weed Eater and unplug it from the wall if it is an electric model. Lay it on a flat surface, such as the ground, and turn it so that the line head faces upward.

    • 2

Detach the spool cover by squeezing the two tabs on the side and pulling up. Some heads screw off in the direction of the printed arrows and have a small guide ring under the cover. If your model has a bump knob on the bottom, simply pull it to remove the cover.

    • 3

Set the cover aside and grasp the inner spool, which is empty, and pull it out. Brush away any grass clippings from the inside of the Weed Eater where the spool sits.

    • 4

Examine the spool closely to identify a small hole in the center. If your model has a duel-line head, there are two holes. Insert the proper size nylon line through the hole or holes by 1/2 inch.

    • 5

Look at the spool for arrows that point in a circular direction. Wind the line around the spool following the direction of the arrows until you have wrapped approximately 12-1/2 feet. Some spools accommodate up to 25 feet of line.

    • 6

Cut the end of the line off of the supply reel using scissors. Grasp the free end on the spool and wrap it into the notch on the side of the spool to hold it in place.

    • 7

Insert the spool back onto the end of the Weed Eater and unwrap the end from the notch. Thread it through inside of the cover, which also has a hole in it, or two holes for duel-line trimmers. Pull the line through the hole by at least 3 to 5 inches.

Snap or screw the cover back into place. Turn the Weed Eater on, plugging it in if needed, and test the trimmer.
