How to Rewind the Pull Cord on a Briggs & Stratton

While some lawn mowers and other devices like chippers or snowblowers powered by small Briggs & Stratton engines have an electric starter, most rely on a pull cord to start the engine. The pull cord is connected to a pulley that turns the shaft of the engine to create the necessary compression to start the engine. While it doesn't happen often, the pull cord can occasionally slip off the pulley and must be repositioned and rewound so that you can start the engine.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the bolts holding the pulley cover from the engine, using a socket and ratchet. Most Briggs & Stratton engines use three 3/8-inch bolts.

    • 2

Lift the pulley cover off the engine and turn it over.

    • 3

Hold the housing in one hand and grasp the cord with the other. Pull the cord all the way out of the housing as far as possible until the end of the cord on the pulley is lined up with the hole in the housing.

    • 4

Release the tension on the cord slowly. Let the cord rewrap itself around the pulley as the cord is retracted.

    • 5

Turn the housing back over and reattach it to the engine.
