How to Repair a Stihl Blower BR4

The Stihl BR4 (actually referred to by its full product name, the BR-45) is a heavy-duty, back-pack style industrial blower that's often used by commercial landscapers. The two-cycled, gas-powered engine is started manually. The Stihl BR-45 should be maintained regularly to keep the blower in top running form, and to prevent breakdowns. However, if the Stihl BR-45 blower malfunctions, there are several repairs that you can perform at home.

Remove the spark plug boot with a pair of pliers. Examine the plug and clean it off with a wire brush if it appears dirty. If it does not seem to fire after cleaning, remove the plug with a spark plug wrench. Screw in a new plug by hand, tighten it with the wrench and place the spark plug boot back on with pliers.

Check the fuel lines that run from the carburetor to the fuel tank. Look for cracked or dry-rotted lines. To access the carburetor, use a screwdriver to remove the two screws holding the cover plate in place. Set the screws and cover plate aside. If lines appear cracked, remove them with a pair of pliers and set new lines in place, then replace the cover plate.

Dump out fuel from the gas tank and dispose of it if the fuel is old. The Stihl blower takes a gas and two-cycle oil mixture. Stihl recommends that the gas-oil mix should not sit longer than a month or two at tops. Mix one gallon of gas to 2.6 fluid oz. in a fresh gas can. Pour the fresh mix into the gas tank of your blower.

Remove the screw holding the air filter cover in place. Slide the cover up and off. Remove the filter by hand. Use a brush or rag to clean the area where the filter rests. Try tapping the filter clean, or replace it with a new filter.
