How to Replace the Kill Switch in a Murray

The kill switch on a Murray Lawn Mower is the main component that shuts the engine off when the operator dismounts from the driver seat. The kill switch has a spring-loaded button that acts as a safety switch. Once the operator gets out of the seat, the button on the kill switch disengages and shuts the engine off. This process is designed to stop the engine and the blade from turning to protect the operator as he is getting off of the mower.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Ratchet and socket
  • New kill switch

Instructions

    • 1

Park the mower and disengage the blade from turning. Shut the engine off. Remove the keys from the ignition.

    • 2

Pull the seat over so that it rests against the steering wheel. Remove the "positive" battery cable from the battery post with an adjustable wrench.

    • 3

Locate the plastic kill switch, directly below the seat. The kill switch has a two-pronged plug on the bottom and a round button at the top. If the seat is in the way, you can remove it by taking the bolts off the seat base with a ratchet and a socket.

    • 4

Squeeze together the plastic tabs on the sides of the switch near the plug. At the same time, pull out on the electrical plug until the plug releases from the prongs of the switch.

    • 5

Unscrew the mounting screw from the base of the switch with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the kill switch out and place it to the side.

    • 6

Mount the new switch with the Phillips head screw. Tighten the screw with the screwdriver. Plug the electrical plug into the two prongs on the back of the switch.

    • 7

Reconnect the positive battery cable to the positive battery post on the battery. Tighten the battery cable with the adjustable wrench. Lower the seat.

    • 8

Crank the Murray lawn mower engine and test the kill switch by getting on and off of the seat while the engine is running and the blade is engaged. The engine should shut off each time you get off the seat.
