How to Open My Lawn Sprinkler System

Homeowners in climates with winters that have freezing temperatures often close their sprinkler systems for the season to avoid the water freezing in the lines that can cause damage to the system. You can also close the system if you are out of town for long periods of time, to prevent water waste. Once the weather warms again, or you return home, you need to open the lawn sprinkler system by returning water to the lines.

Instructions

    • 1

Close the drain valves outside and inside as part of the control system. If you have a pressure vacuum breaker outside, turn the handles to "Closed."

    • 2

Open the shut-off valve all the way. The shut-off valve is usually inside. This will allow water to enter the system's lines.

    • 3

Turn the handle on the bottom of the pressure vacuum breaker to "Open" with one quick twist. Wait for the water to stop coming out of the top of the breaker. Turn the handle on the top of the breaker to "Open" slowly, and just to halfway. When you stop hearing water running through the lines, open it all the way.

Plug your system controller into an electrical outlet. Manually turn on each system zone one at a time to test the lines. Turn on the system and walk the lawn, making sure each sprinkler head is pointing in the right direction and has proper water pressure. Reset your system to automatic, if desired.
