Turn off the trimmer and unplug the spark plug wire from the top of the spark plug. The Twist-N-Edge trimmers with a cap on the bottom of the head are gas trimmers. Allow the head to completely stop before changing the line.
Place the trimmer on its side. Grab the spool in one hand and turn the bottom securing cap counterclockwise with your free hand. Remove the cap from the trimmer head.
Lift the guide ring off the bottom of the line spool. The guide ring is a silver ring with a hole that the end of the string feeds from the spool. Lift the spool away from the trimmer.
Cut 30 feet of .080 trimmer line from the bulk spool with a utility knife. Insert one end of the line through the center cavity of the spool. Hold the end of the line against the spool with your thumb and wind the line around the spool in the direction of the arrow on the spool.
Wind the line evenly and tightly until 8 inches of line remains. Slide the line spool over the shaft of the trimmer. Place the guide ring on the spool in the indented area, and insert the end of the line through the hole on the ring.
Hold the spool firmly and screw the cap onto the end of the shaft until it is hand tight.
Unplug the power cord from the trimmer, if you have an electric trimmer. If you have a gas model, turn the unit off and unplug the spark plug wire from the plug.
Grab the bump knob with one hand and the shaft of the trimmer above the head guard with your free hand. Pull the bump knob; the trimmer line spool will release from the housing.
Clean the inside of the spool housing on the trimmer with a clean rag. Remove any old line from the spool. Cut 20 feet of .080 trimmer line from your stock spool with a utility knife. Insert one end of the line ½-inch into the hole on the side of the spool. The line will lock into place.
Wind the line in the direction of the arrow on the spool. Wind the line evenly and tight until only 5 inches remains. Insert the end of the line through the two notches on the bottom of the spool.
Insert the spool into the housing, guiding the end of the line through the hole in the side of the housing. Press the bump knob firmly until the spool clicks into position. Pull the end of the line to release it from the holding notches on the spool.
Place the Twist-N-Edge on its side. Avoid touching the trigger area when replacing the line.
Press the two side tabs on the spool head with your fingers and lift the cap away from the spool. Lift the spool out of the housing. Remove any remaining line from each of the two channels on the spool. This spool uses two lines that wind around the channels.
Cut two pieces of replacement .065 trimmer line from a stock spool with a utility knife. Each piece must be 13 feet long. Insert an end of one of the lines into the hole in one of the channels. The end locks into position. Wind the line evenly and tightly around the spool in the direction of the arrow until only 5 inches remains. Insert the end of the line through the two notches on the outside of the channel.
Repeat the installation process with the second line in the remaining channel.
Insert the spool into the housing, guiding the lines through the two eyelets on the side of the housing. Place the cap back over the spool and press down until it locks into position. Grab the ends of both lines with your hands and pull to release them from the spool notches.
