How to Forge a Hoe

Frankly, this article may make you wonder why you can't just head out and purchase a hoe. The tools are affordable at hardware stores and home improvement warehouses. That is not the point here though. The goal here is to do something good for the environment by making a hoe from parts that you may already have at home. This project requires a bit of time and dedication to the cause, but the end result will be solid and reliable.

  • 1/2-inch drill bit

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a wooden handle meant to be used for tools and brooms or convert an older tool handle. Fiberglass handles are also an option, but not necessary and cost more.

    • 2

Drill six to eight inches into the end of the handle with a 1/2-inch drill bit to accommodate your steel bar.

    • 3

Bend one end of the steel bar up and around to create the hook at the end of a hoe. Slide the other end of the bar up and into the handle.

    • 4

Measure an old shovel about six to eight inches from the tip of the blade. Mark a line across the blade at the measurement point. Cut the blade off at the measurement point with a hacksaw.

    • 5

Weld the cut blade onto the curved end of the steel bar. Avoid overheating and melting or warping the blade. Point the tip of the blade toward the bend in the hoe. Situate the wide part of the blade at the bottom. Hit the metal end of the hoe with a rubber mallet or slam the other end of the hoe against a hard surface to push the bar into the handle.
