How to Replace a 4175 Cub Cadet Pull String

The 4175 is a gas-powered string lawn trimmer manufactured by Cub Cadet. Although Cub Cadet is best known for its riding lawn mowers, the company also produces several types of lawn trimmers. The 4175 has a two-cycle engine and is started using a pull-string starter. The pull-start rope on the 4175 can snap, or become otherwise worn and frail. If the trimmer pull-rope is in poor condition it can be replaced with a new pull-rope which you can buy at most home centers in the lawn and garden department.

Instructions

    • 1

Take off the 4175's spark plug wire using the pliers.

    • 2

Remove the trimmer's starter cover screws using a screwdriver, set them aside and remove the starter cover.

    • 3

Cut the old starter rope with a knife just below the handle and pull the old remnants from the handle using the pliers. Pull the remaining starter rope spooled inside the starter housing until the recoil spring comes loose and set it aside. Unwind the rest of the old rope from the starter pulley and remove the end of it using pliers if need be.

    • 4

Slip one end of the new starter rope into the hole on middle of the pulley. Slip the other end of the starter rope through the rubber handle, knot that end of the rope and pull it into the top of the handle.

    • 5

Wind the remaining rope around the starter pulley leaving only about eight inches of starter rope. Slip the recoil spring back into place until it clicks into position. Pull the starter rope lightly until the slack is removed from the rope and the recoil appears to be engaged.

Slip the starter cover back onto the body of the 4175, replace the cover screws and tighten them using the screwdriver. Also replace the trimmer's spark plug wire over the tip of the plug.
