How to Troubleshoot a Craftsman Chainsaw Model #358.355140

A Craftsman gasoline chainsaw makes cutting trees and branches easier than with a manually-operated saw or an electric chainsaw. This gasoline chainsaw, model #358.355140, is powered by a small engine that runs on a gasoline and oil mixture. The engine rotates a gear that drives the chain along the chain bar, allowing the chain to cut efficiently. If the chainsaw fails to start or does not run right, Craftsman has a few recommended troubleshooting steps to follow.

Check the ignition switch. The ignition switch should be in the "Start" position.

    • 2

Verify the fuel level in the tank. The fuel should be near the "Fill" line indicator. Add fuel to this mark if necessary.

    • 3

Inspect the spark plug for any cracks and replace it if necessary. First remove the spark plug wire by hand then take out the spark plug with a socket wrench. Install a new spark plug and tighten it securely with the socket wrench. Push the spark plug wire onto the spark plug manually.

Determine if the fuel is more than 30 days old. If the fuel is old, it should be discarded. Remove the fuel cap. Place a drain pan on the ground near the fuel tank. Tilt the chainsaw and allow the old fuel to flow into the drain pan. Dispose of the old fuel according to local rules and regulations. Fill the fuel tank with fresh fuel to the "Fill" line indicator. Replace the fuel cap.

Locate the air filter/carburetor cover. Remove the two screws for the cover with a screwdriver. Lift the cover off gently and remove the air filter. Clean the air filter with a mixture of dish soap and water or replace the old filter with a new one if necessary. Replace the air filter/carburetor cover and reinstall the two screws.
