How to Replace a Craftsman Mower Belt 46-Inch 18.5 HP

According to the owner's manual for the Craftsman 18.5-horsepower, 46-inch mower, the V-belt that powers the mower deck does not have an adjustment system built into the mower deck. Craftsman suggests you replace the mower belt when the blades start to slip under heavy loads. The process for replacing a belt on the Craftsman 46-inch mower is straightforward and only takes one person to do. In fact, you do not have to dismantle the deck to finish the job.

Instructions

    • 1

Drive the mower and park it on level ground. Turn off the ignition and set the parking brake.

    • 2

Place the mower deck on its lowest position possible via the deck level adjustment lever mounted on the mower deck. This increases the space between the bottom of the mower and the deck. This way, you can get your hands in to replace the belt easier.

    • 3

Release tension on the belt by disengaging the mower blades if you have not already done so.

    • 4

Pull the belt off the pulley mounted on the bottom of the mower then pull the belt back toward the deck.

    • 5

Make a mental note or draw a picture of the pulley configuration on the deck. Pull the belt off the deck and place the new belt onto the deck. Follow the same routing as the previous belt.

    • 6

Pull the belt forward and wrap it around the pulley on the front of the mower.

    • 7

Lift the mower deck back to its normal height and engage the mower deck before you mow again.
