How to Replace a Lawn-Boy Mower Drive Belt

Lawn-Boy push mowers have a drive belt that connects the front wheels to a pulley mounted under the mower deck. The belt runs a small transmission that forces the wheels to spin. As the belt ages, you can adjust the tensioner screw to keep the belt tight. However, once you cannot tighten the belt any longer with the screw, you must replace it with a new belt to keep the mower operating properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the screws that secure the transmission cover to the top-front corner of the mower and then squeeze the sides of the cover and pull the cover off the mower deck.

    • 2

Locate the tensioner screw on the transmission and then turn it clockwise with a screwdriver to loosen tension on the drive belt.

    • 3

Slide the drive belt off the transmission pulley and push the belt through the access hole in the mower deck.

    • 4

Place the mower on its side so the air filter faces upward. Do not place it on its side with the filter facing downward. Otherwise, you will flood the filter with gasoline.

    • 5

Pull the remainder of the belt through the access hole in the mower deck and then pull the belt off the pulley positioned between the mower blades and the bottom of the deck. Be careful not to cut yourself on the blade as you pull the belt around the blade.

    • 6

Slide the new belt around the blade and place it on the pulley. Push the belt through the access hole in the mower deck.

    • 7

Pull the belt the remainder of the way though the deck from the top side and then place the belt over the transmission pulley.

    • 8

Place the mower on four wheels and tighten the tensioner screw until the belt rests tightly on the pulleys.

    • 9

Place the cover onto the mower deck and secure it with both screws.
