How to Replace Shear Pins in an MTD Tiller

The shear pin on an MTD garden tiller is designed to break in the event that the tines on the tiller hit an object too hard to crush. This allows the tines' housing to spin on the main shaft and prevents damage to the main shaft. Because tilling new ground can cause shear pin breakage, understanding how to replace a shear pin will help you get your tiller back up and running if this happens.

Things You'll Need

  • Work gloves
  • Needle-nose pliers (Optional)
  • Replacement shear pin
  • Cotter pin

Instructions

    • 1

Tilt your tiller forward if the tines mount to the rear of the machine. If you have a machine with front-mounted tines, tilt the machine up.

    • 2

Shift the tiller's tines into the neutral position with the clutch lever.

    • 3

Spin the tines' housing around the main shaft until you line up the shear pin hole on both the housing and the main shaft.

    • 4

Slide the shear pin into the hole and inspect the backside of the housing to ensure the pin protrudes.

    • 5

Press a cotter pin through the hole on the shear pin to lock the pin in place.
