Step-by-Step on How to Replace a Solenoid Valve on a Sprinkler System

Automatic sprinkling systems utilize solenoid-operated valves to disburse water in selected areas known as zones. A solenoid device converts electricity to mechanical action. A preset timer sends an electrical current to the zone solenoid, which opens the sprinkler water valve. When the timer signals the solenoid circuit, the water valve closes and the sprinkler is turned off. You can replace a faulty solenoid on a sprinkler system valve in 10 minutes or less.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the electrical power supply to the sprinkler system off.

    • 2

Locate the solenoid valve assigned to the zone that is not operating.

    • 3

Remove the electrical plug from the top of the solenoid. Pull the plug straight up by hand.

    • 4

Turn the solenoid valve counterclockwise by hand to remove it from the water valve body. If the solenoid is too tight, apply gentle jaw pressure with lockjaw pliers to loosen it.

    • 5

Install the new solenoid valve. Tighten clockwise by hand.

    • 6

Replace the electrical plug onto the solenoid valve until it is fully seated.

    • 7

Restore electrical power to the sprinkling system.
