How to Take Off a Mower Deck on a John Deere 425 Lawn Tractor

Every year before you begin mowing for the season, you should inspect the drive belts that control your mower deck and you should inspect the blades to determine if you must sharpen or replace them. In addition, you should also thoroughly clean the underside of the mower deck at the end and sometimes in the middle of the cutting season to minimize grass buildup. To complete any of these tasks on your John Deere 425, you must remove the mower deck first. Removing the mower deck is a DIY task that does not require a service center for completion.

Position the mower deck on your John Deere 425 at its highest level with the deck adjustment lever.

    • 2

Position a block under both side edges of the deck for support. After placing the blocks, lower the deck on your John Deere 425 onto the blocks with the deck adjustment lever.

Locate the linkage rods on both sides of the mower deck and remove the cotter pins that hold the linkage rods onto the mounting rods located under the lawn tractor by pulling upward on the cotter pins. Pull the large round washers off the mounting rods and then pull the linkage rods off the mounting rods.

Slide the deck forward and remove the drive belt from the drive pulley mounted under the motor. Leave the belt on the deck's pulley system including the drive pulleys for the blades and the tensioner pulley.
