How to Replace the Belt for a Murry 42-Inch Riding Lawnmower

The Murry 42-inch mower deck is one of the largest mower decks designed by the Murry company. The deck hangs from the bottom of a standard Murry lawn tractor via torsion rods. When the drive belt wears out, you might think you have to remove the mower deck from the lawn tractor. However, due to the design of the mower, you can change the belt with the deck still installed. Replace the belt when it stretches and starts to make squealing noises, or when the belt starts to rot.

Instructions

    • 1

Lower the PTO lever to its lowest position. The PTO lever is located on the front panel of the driver's seat; it disengages the mower blades and creates slack in the drive belt.

    • 2

Lower the mower deck with the long height adjustment lever located on the deck. This lowers the mower deck away from the bottom of the lawn tractor.

    • 3

Position yourself in front of the mower, look under it and locate the PTO clutch pulley under the engine. Grip the belt on the pulley and then pull the belt off the pulley.

    • 4

Remove the belt from the spindle pulleys and idler pulleys on the mower deck. Place the new belt onto the deck's pulley system.

    • 5

Stretch the belt forward and position it over the PTO pulley.

    • 6

Lift the mower deck and engage the PTO lever before you begin to mow again.
