How to Put a Belt on a Murray Lawnmower

Murray lawnmowers, no longer in production, were built with a mower deck attached to the bottom side of a modest lawn tractor. The deck was not designed to come off easily, so when replacing a drive belt, your best option is to complete the installation with the mower deck intact. Although this will make working on the lawnmower slightly cramped for you, it does decrease the amount of time and effort it takes to put on the new belt.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the mower, disengage the lawnmower blades with the lever on the left fender and then lower the deck to its lowest position with the lever on the right fender.

    • 2

Turn off the ignition and remove the key. Allow at least 20-minutes cooling time if the mower is warmed up.

    • 3

Lie on the ground in front of the lawnmower and locate the round drive belt pulley protruding from the bottom of the mower's engine.

    • 4

Turn the pulley clockwise as you pull on the belt. The belt will jump over the V-groove on the pulley and make it easier to work the belt off the pulley.

    • 5

Draw a picture of the Murray mower deck and draw a depiction of how the belt routes around the pulleys.

    • 6

Pull the belt off the mower pulleys on the Murray lawnmower deck and then place the new belt onto the pulleys, following your depiction the belt's route.

    • 7

Pull the belt to the front of the mower and then slide the belt over the pulley under the engine.
