How to Adjust the Auger Belt on a 5 Horsepower MTD Snow Blower

The MTD 5-horsepower snow blower is capable of moving a moderate amount of snow in a short amount of time. The auger is the round part of the snow blower that churns up the snow so it can be blown away from your sidewalk. The auger runs off a drive belt that connects to the engine. Obviously, the drive belt sees a lot of moisture. Excessive moisture can cause the belt to rot prematurely. When this happens, you must replace the belt with a new one or you could end up shoveling your sidewalk the next time it snows.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a piece of plastic wrap under the gas cap and then secure the gas cap onto the gas tank. Otherwise, siphon the gas out of the gas tank with a hose siphon. This prevents leakage when you maneuver the snow blower into place for belt removal.

    • 2

Remove the two screws that secure the plastic belt over onto the side of the engine with a screwdriver. Place the cover off to the side.

    • 3

Roll the auger belt off the engine pulley. To make the process easier, manually rotate the motor pulley by hand, as you roll the belt off.

    • 4

Lift the snow blower into an up and forward position. Rest the snow blower on the auger housing.

    • 5

Remove the metal frame cover from the bottom of the snow blower by removing the screws that secure it into place with a screwdriver.

    • 6

Remove the shoulder screw from inside the snow blower housing. The shoulder screw is a belt keeper and keeps the belt from slipping off the auger pulley.

    • 7

Unhook the support bracket sing from the auger support bracket with your hand.

    • 8

Lower the belt down and remove it from the auger pulley. Slide the belt between the auger pulley and belt support bracket.

    • 9

Place the new belt onto the auger pulley, reconnect the support bracket spring and then tighten the shoulder screw in place.

    • 10

Reattach the metal frame cover to the bottom of the snow blower and then tilt the snow blower to its normal position.

    • 11

Roll the belt onto the engine pulley. Again, manually rotate the pulley as you roll the belt on to make the task easier.

    • 12

Place the cover back over the engine pulley and secure it with the screwdriver.

    • 13

Remove the plastic wrap from the gas cap or refill the snow blower with the fuel you removed.
