How to Install a Belt on an Older Ariens Snow Blower

The attachment drive belt on an older Ariens snow blower controls the rotary tines that churn the snow and then send it through the machine for removal. The belt, exposed to harsh elements, wears out quicker than many parts on a snow blower. Fortunately, the attachment drive belt is a user-serviceable part that you can replace in your own garage in a matter of minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the snow blower in a dry location, turn off the engine and allow 15 to 20 minutes for the engine to cool.

    • 2

Remove the screws that secure the belt cover to the outside of the snow blower's housing.

    • 3

Locate the chute crank, which is the handle you use to change the direction of the blower chute, and then remove the spring clip from the crank. Remove the chute crank from the snow blower.

    • 4

Remove the bolts that hold the chute onto the snow blower with a wrench, and then remove the chute from the snow blower.

    • 5

Locate the cap screws that hold the belt fingers around the pulley that will be exposed after you remove the belt cover. Use an Allen wrench to loosen the caps, and then rotate the belt fingers away from the pulley.

    • 6

Grip the belt on each side of the engine pulley, and then pull the belt off the pulley.

    • 7

Remove the cap screws that hold the tine housing to the frame of the snow blower, and then pivot the tine housing away from the frame on its pivot screws.

    • 8

Remove the drive belt from the attachment pulley.

    • 9

Place the new belt onto the attachment pulley, and then rotate the tine housing up against the frame of the snow blower.

    • 10

Stretch the belt until you can place it over the drive pulley.

    • 11

Secure the tine housing to the frame of the snow blower with the cap screws.

    • 12

Slide the fingers around the pulley, and then secure them by tightening the cap screws.

    • 13

Reconnect the chute and chute crank to the snow blower, and then secure the belt cover into place.
