How to Check Trans Fluid on a John Deere 317

The transmission on your John Deere 317 riding mower is the mechanism that shifts the gears. Part of maintaining the transmission is making sure there is enough transmission fluid to keep the gears lubricated and prevent the transmission from slipping. The transmission fluid should be checked regularly with each use along with the oil level.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the mower and allow it to run. Do not engage the blade and make sure the brake is engaged.

    • 2

Lift the engine cover and then remove the transmission fluid dipstick. Wipe it clean with a rag, place it back into the dipstick tube and then pull it out again.

    • 3

Examine the reading on the stick. If it falls below the low level indicator, add transmission fluid. If it is not low, replace the dipstick and close the engine compartment.
