How to Adjust the Control Valve for Lawn Sprinklers

Lawn sprinkler systems operate with multiple control valves attached to sprinkler heads set at regular intervals. The control valve for each sprinkler head opens and closes based on the settings you enter on the electronic control panel. Household water pressure typically is not powerful enough to drive an entire sprinkler system at one time, so the control valves open to irrigate different areas of the lawn according to a programmable schedule. Adjustments to the valves and control panel take only a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the sprinkler system at the control box so you do not get an unexpected shower while adjusting the control valves.

    • 2

Push the grass back from the sprinkler head to locate the control valve on each head.

    • 3

Turn the screw in the valve control to adjust the water throw from the sprinkler head. Turning the screw clockwise narrows the arc or radius of the water throw, while turning the screw counterclockwise widens the sprinkler range.

    • 4

Press the zone control button on the main control panel to select the on/off times for each valve control. Valve controls on a sprinkler system are arranged in different zones on the lawn, with each valve control representing a different zone. The precise procedure varies from one model of sprinkler system to another, but setting the activation times is essentially the same as setting a digital alarm clock.
