How to Troubleshoot an Echo String Trimmer

Echo string trimmers are designed to clear away grass and weeds from around obstacles such as trees and buildings. The trimmers can access lawn areas where a mower can't be used. Echo designs the trimmers to last for many years of normal use with regular maintenance. However, if you experience problems with your Echo string trimmer, the company recommends performing a series of troubleshooting steps.

      Check the amount of fuel in the fuel tank. If necessary, add fuel. Inspect the fuel line for breaks or clogs. Replace the fuel line, if necessary.

      Check the ignition spark. Remove the spark plug wire, using your fingers. Remove the spark plug, using a socket wrench. Clean the spark plug, or replace it with a new one. Install the spark plug, using a socket wrench. Attach the spark plug wire, pushing it firmly onto the spark plug with your fingers.

      Check the air filter for dirt or debris. Open the air filter cover with your fingers. Remove the air filter and clean it with soapy water. Replace it with a new filter if necessary. Install the new air filter, or reinstall the newly cleaned filter, and close the air filter cover.

      Clean the air cooling system. Remove the spark plug lead and throttle linkage, using your fingers. Remove the four air cooler cover retaining screws, using a screwdriver. Lift the cover away from the trimmer and set it aside. Use a brush to remove any dirt or debris from the cooling fins. Reinstall the cover, using a screwdriver. Reattach the spark plug lead and throttle linkage with your fingers.

      Check the carburetor adjustment. If the engine runs but does not accelerate or dies during acceleration, you may need to adjust the carburetor. The adjustment technique varies for each model, but usually requires only a screwdriver.
