How to Rebuild a Weed Eater Motor

Rebuilding a weed eater motor is a great alternative to buying a whole new weed eater. However, if you rebuild it improperly, you may break it beyond repair. Rebuilding such motors will require, to some extent, some sort of prior experience and knowledge of working with motors. The exact time frame for such a process may exceed a week if there are many problems. However, most problems would take only one or two afternoons.

Instructions

    • 1

Read over the manual, paying special attention to the structure of your weed eater. Familiarize yourself with the different parts and write down the number of bolts, screws, or any other parts you will remove.

    • 2

Set the weed eater on the floor, preferably somewhere without grass or vegetation. Remove any bolts or screws that are holding the plastic casing in place with a screwdriver or wrench from your toolkit. Place the removed screws, bolts, and nuts into the container for safekeeping.

    • 3

Locate the motor and remove any bolts holding it to the rest of the machine. Some weed eaters will have a fuel tank blocking this motor. You may have to remove the bolts on that as well. Carefully lift the motor away from the machine and set it on the ground.

    • 4

Remove the spark plug from the machine by turning it to the left until it can be removed. Unbolt any bolts that are holding the carburetor in place. Lift the carburetor away from the rest of the motor. Remove any other bolts and lift the drive shaft away from the machine.

    • 5

Check all the parts for inconsistencies with the manual. Replace any broken, rusted, or worn out parts with replacement parts. You may have to find a local dealer to get your hands on these parts. You can also try to find and order them online.

Read over the assembly instructions on the manual. Place the drive shaft back into the motor and bolt it on. Lift the carburetor and carefully place it in to its socket. Bolt it in place. Take the spark plug and insert it into the socket for the plug and turn it to the right until it cannot be turned anymore.

    • 7

Place the motor back into the weed eater and bolt the motor in place. If you removed the fuel tank in Step 3, bolt that back into place as well. Place the casing back on the weed eater and bolt it in place.

Double check that you have no bolts or screws that you forgot to put back in. Repeat from Step 3 while skipping Step 5 if you do find any forgotten parts. Check the machine to see if it works. Repeat from Step 1 if it does not.
